A Sci-Fi Crime Franchise Is Doing Double Time In Netflix's Top Charts

06-03-2024

Top 10 chart has so far featured everything from an Alexander Skarsgard/Margot Robbie forgotten film to a sci-fi comedy cult classic. It was good to see a different film in the Netflix Top 10 charts than Kevin Hart’s “Lift”, as the most recent standup movie from Hart seems to just be another in a long line of middling streaming films that have somehow managed to dominate Netflix’s top-rated rankings. Hart is no longer on the Netflix charts, which means that more recent and popular TV and films are now taking its place. This month, a Canadian series has managed to grab viewers' attention.

In 2016, "Code 8", a short film, was released as an introductory trailer to a crowdfunded larger project. The project was finally realized in 2019, as a full-length science fiction film, "Code 8", written and directed Jeff Chan. Stephen and Robbie Amell star in the film, which was released in theaters in December 2019.

It will be available on Netflix by April 2020. Robbie Amell is Connor Reed. He's a man who can produce and manipulate electrical energy. In this fictional world, he is one of only 4% people with such powers. The government is cracking down on gifted people, and they are now required to register with authorities. Connor uses his talents to do construction work without registering with the authorities. He is then drawn into a criminal world, where he does illicit jobs for money to help his mother.

It doesn't seem too bad does it? thought the movie was so good that they bought the sequel. It will be available on Netflix February 28th, 2024. You'd be surprised to learn that the audience is just as enamored with the latest instalment of the franchise.

WIRED noted that "Code 8" wasn't a Netflix Original. It did, however, manage to reach the top of the Netflix chart for most watched films when it was released. This made a sequel likely, despite its less than stellar box office. Netflix acquired the rights and released "Code 8: Part II". In this sequel, Connor Reed returns to the screen. This time he joins up with a drug lord to rescue a teenage girl from a corrupt cop.
The sequel to "Part I" has once more captured the interest of viewers around the globe.

Not only did it enter Netflix's Top 10 Charts following its release, but the movie itself was also included. The sequel has risen to the second most watched movie on Netflix in 2024. It had previously occupied the first spot, but fell from it after four days. The first film is now at the number three spot after battling its way from fifth place on February 29, 2024. There's much more to this story.

FlixPatrol's streaming data shows that "Code 8: Part II", has topped the charts of the top-watched movies in 93 different countries, including the United States. It is also number one at this time in forty of those countries. It seems that "Part II" is a global hit, as everyone from Jamaica to the UK has been streaming it. The original "Code 8," which is enjoying a real revival, has charted in 63 different countries and reached the second spot in Belgium on March 4, 2024.
Code 8 is a far cry from its early days

In 2016, the Amell cousins embarked on an adventure to create their first film as a team. They raised money via Indiegogo, which ultimately brought them more than they had hoped for. The success of "Code 8", the next project, continued. The film may not have been a big hit in the theaters but it was a huge success on streaming services, so a sequel is almost certain.
The sequel is not only a success, it has even outperformed the original on streaming. It's impressive that "Code 8: Part II" has charted across 93 different countries. This puts it in line with the mega-hit of last year, "Leave the World Behind", which was also successful in 93 markets (though the Netflix Original managed to reach number one in 85).

The fact that "Code 8: Part II", which began as an independent sci-fi project, has become a popular streaming series is clear. The original had an 81% Rotten Tomatoes rating, while the sequel only has a score of 69%. But that didn't stop the streaming crowd from watching.

Netflix users will, we know, watch almost anything. There's more to "Code 8", than just your typical streaming content. This isn't another "Lift", so you might want to give the films a try if haven't done it already.
